Remembering Together at the Synagogue Memorial

A Place of Remembrance and Responsibility
Since 1973, a memorial service has been held annually at the memorial of the former Göttingen Synagogue. This historical site commemorates the destruction of the synagogue and the Jewish individuals who were disenfranchised, persecuted, expelled, and murdered. The remembrance connects historical processing with a clear stand against anti-Semitism and every form of inhumane exclusion.
Student Perspectives on Göttingen's History
The content preparation in 2026 will be handled by students from the history classes of the Max Planck Gymnasium under the guidance of Alexander Liebig. The focus will be on the specific events surrounding the arson attack on the Göttingen Synagogue. The foundation will be based on extensive research by Göttingen historian Dr. Peter Kriedte.
Music, Silence, and Collective Remembrance
The musical arrangement will be provided by Maren and Mathias Böhme with flute and violin. The sounds will create a space for reflection, empathy, and inner gathering. In the collective moment of remembrance, in prayer, and in silent reflection, the religious and social significance of this evening will be felt.
Christian-Jewish Cooperation in Göttingen
The memorial service is organized by the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation Göttingen and the city of Göttingen. The event is part of the series Remembering the Victims of National Socialism. It invites people of different faiths as well as all those interested in history and society.
The memorial service will begin on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 6:00 PM and will last until 7:00 PM. Admission is free. Visitors can expect a focused spiritual experience of remembrance, a spiritual community at the historical site, and a compelling sign for tolerance, dialogue, and human dignity.
