University of Göttingen Postpones Sports Festival
Rain Stops University Sports Festival in Göttingen – New Date Set
The large sports and cultural festival of the University of Göttingen has been postponed at short notice. The decision was not made due to organizational problems, but for safety reasons: Heavy rainfall was forecast for today, and the risk of falls and injuries increases significantly on soaked sports fields.
The “Dies Academicus” will therefore not take place today. The University of Göttingen announced that under the expected weather conditions, safe conduct of the competitions could not be guaranteed. The make-up date is set for June 24.
Safety Takes Priority Over Play
The focus of the cancellation is the protection of the participants. Wet fields change grip and speed, duels and changes of direction become more unpredictable – especially in sports that require quick starts or jumps. According to the university, the risk of injury would have been too high under these conditions. As a consequence, postponing the entire program was the only option.
Ten Tournaments and Around 1,500 Participants Affected
The “Dies Academicus” is one of the larger sporting events in the university’s calendar. A total of ten tournaments with around 1,500 participants are planned. The program includes, among other things, soccer and beach volleyball. The postponement therefore affects not just individual competitions, but the entire sporting schedule of the day.
Sports Festival Remains an Event for the Whole Region
The day is organized not only as a competition, but as an open sports and cultural festival. It is aimed at members of the university as well as interested people from Göttingen and the region. In addition to the tournaments, there are participation activities and stage performances planned. This concept will not change due to the postponement – only the date will be adjusted.
The postponement affects an event with a wide reach and broad program. However, the university is setting a clear priority: safe conditions for all involved. June 24 is already set as the new date.
