Always Spring Awakening at the German Theatre Göttingen: Youth between Wit and World-shaking

When Growing Up Shakes the World

On November 4, 2026, the German Theatre Göttingen presents Always Spring Awakening, a poetic yet unflinching exploration of youth, identity, and societal pressure. David Paquet's German-language premiere takes Frank Wedekind's classic as a starting point and brings it into the present day.

A Classic in the Mirror of Today

Six young people explore their sexuality and desires, their fears and insecurities, their goals and wishes. Between self-discovery, familial expectations, and political upheavals, a theatrical experience emerges that the history of theatre knows and simultaneously questions anew. The characters no longer move only between rebellious youth and the overpowering adult world: The conflicts run through each individual personality.

Grotesque Humor Meets Existential Questions

The direction by Alexander Nerlich combines wit, physical energy, and dramatic weight. The ensemble encounters the questions of growing up with great acting skill and remarkable rhythmic precision. Comedic moments tip into reflection, and poetic images take on a sharp social contour.

Set Design, Costumes, and Sound as Independent Narrative Levels

Heike M. Goetze's set design and costumes create a bizarre, at times topsy-turvy world where inner states become visible. Malte Preuss designs music and sound as atmospheric resonance spaces, while Valentí Rocamora i Torà's choreography makes the body the central means of expression. Light, acoustics, and movement intensify the theatrical atmosphere into an immediate sensual experience.

An Excellent Premise for a Bold Production

Quebec playwright David Paquet received a significant Canadian award for drama for young audiences for the original version. His reinterpretation raises questions about gender identity, moral narrowness, and the possibilities of experiencing one's body and life. The Göttingen production has been praised by the press for its surprising scenes, humor, poetic moments, and multifaceted dramaturgy.

Conclusion: Theatre that Continues After the Final Applause

Always Spring Awakening promises an evening between comedy and disturbance, between great stage art and painful closeness to the present. Those who experience theatre as a space of shared knowledge, vibrant audience reactions, and emotional surprises will find an evening here that resonates long after.
