Resistance, Courage, and Freedom: Annette, a Heroine Epic at the German Theater Göttingen
On November 13, 2026, the German Theater Göttingen will transform into a memorial space for an extraordinary life story. The stage adaptation of Anne Weber's award-winning novel tells the story of Anne Beaumanoir, who joined the Resistance as a young woman, saved two Jewish children, and later stood up for her beliefs in the Algerian War of Independence.
A Life Between Conscience and Danger
Anne Weber paints the portrait of a woman whose biography directly touches on the great questions of history: What drives a person to resistance? How far does personal responsibility extend? And what price does the fight for freedom demand? From this real-life story arises a modern heroine epic that connects political upheaval with a deeply personal perspective.
A Production with Narrative Power
Director Ebru Tartıcı Borchers guides the ensemble through a production that intertwines narrative theater, acting artistry, and musical atmosphere. Sam Beklik is responsible for the set design and costumes, while Dani Catalán Dávila creates the music. Soft drums and finely crafted soundscapes accompany the stage action like an inner heartbeat, as the dramaturgy oscillates between biographical accuracy, subtle irony, and historical urgency.
From the Fishing House in Brittany to Algeria
The plot leads from Anne Beaumanoir's youth in Brittany through the secret work in the French Resistance to her engagement in the Algerian War of Independence. Her rescue of two Jewish children later earned her the title Righteous Among the Nations. After the war, she worked as a neurophysiologist before becoming involved again in political resistance movements.
A Literature Prize-Winning Source on Stage
Anne Weber received the German Book Prize 2020 for the novel Annette, a Heroine Epic. The theater adaptation preserves the special tension of the book: The epic does not appear as a pathetic monument but as a movable, clever, and surprisingly nimble form in which courage, doubt, and contradiction remain visible. Previous press reviews highlight the coherent narrative style, atmospheric music, and the powerful ensemble.
An Intense Stage Experience
The performance lasts about 160 minutes, including a break. The audience can expect a concentrated theater experience with historical depth, compelling acting, and a production that resonates long after the performance evening.
Conclusion: Annette, a Heroine Epic connects great history with an immediately tangible theater atmosphere. Those who appreciate political literature, biographical theater, and strong female figures will experience an evening full of excitement, resonance, and humanist strength at the German Theater Göttingen.
