Jewish Voices: Evocative Song Evening at the Old Town Hall Göttingen

When Memory Turns into Music: A Special Song Evening in Göttingen

On November 1, 2026, Prof. Eva Kirchner and Prof. Julia Bartha invite you to an evocative song evening about Jewish identity, memory, and musical modernity at the Old Town Hall in Göttingen. Admission is free.

Music Between Belonging and Exclusion

The program features works by Alexander von Zemlinsky, Mieczysław Weinberg, Gustav Mahler, Alban Berg, and Roger Quilter. Their songs open a musical space where personal biographies, cultural belonging, and societal upheavals become audible.

Soprano and Piano with Sonic Precision

Prof. Eva Kirchner shapes the evening with her soprano voice, accompanied by Prof. Julia Bartha on the piano. The interplay of voice, piano sound, and nuanced interpretation creates a concentrated stage performance that connects lyrical delicacy with historical dimension.

A Concert as a Musical Space of Remembrance

The selected composers represent different experiences: assimilation and cultural intertwining, artistic freedom and social exclusion, flight and exile. Their music was created in various countries and historical situations. Thus, the song evening connects music history with questions that reach into the present.

In the Heart of Göttingen's Old Town

The Old Town Hall at Markt 9 provides the atmospheric setting for this concert. The event is part of the series Commemoration of the Victims of National Socialism – An Event Series in Göttingen. The organizers are the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation Göttingen and the Protestant Adult Education of South Lower Saxony.

Conclusion: An Evening that Resonates

Visitors can expect a demanding song evening with great historical depth, expressive vocal art, and focused piano accompaniment. Those who wish to experience music as a living form of memory should not miss this free concert at the Old Town Hall in Göttingen.
